This page contains the final form of historical news items from the front (main) page of wiki.g.o. "Final form" is because some of the news items had several slight revisions before they stayed on the page. Imagine each news item as Frieza or Goku from Dragon Ball Z and the final form concept may be to understand... or maybe not.

December 30, 2023: Community help needed to implement the Anchor template on translated base pages

Earlier this year the wiki team added the {{Anchor}} template like implemented at Wikipedia in order to avoid spamming <span id="link_name"></span> elements within section headers of translated base pages.

Going forward, in order for linking to work properly, this template must be used within each section headers of each base page that has been marked for translation. Although strictly unnecessary, it can also be deployed to base pages not (yet) marked for translation to prepare them for translation. The wiki project welcomes community support for deployment of {{Anchor}} across the rest of the translated articles on the wiki. Deployment has been completed for the Gentoo Handbook pages and the Portage article. Community member who would like to help with this effort can use those pages as a reference.

September 03, 2023: Changelog for the Gentoo Handbooks

As an effort to better track and measure changes 'at a glance' to the Gentoo Handbooks, the Handbook Project has created a Changelog page.

Going forward, changes across the handbooks will be loosely based on a semantic versioning scheme as inspired by Common Changelog. The team will maintain the log with best-effort intention. Additional rationale and motivation for an official changelog can found here.

July 10, 2023: Updates to project wiki form

It has been a hot summer so far, but minor enhancements to project pages here on the wiki have ensued. The project wiki form and template now have fields to support URLs for linking an external homepage and a primary code repository.

  • Code repo(sitory) links to gitweb.g.o or any source code site for Gentoo projects which maintain a code base (opt in). A lot of projects have source code hosted on Gentoo's gitweb instance, but some have no associated source code. This will make finding the associated project's source code easier for project members and those exploring the Gentoo ecosystem.
  • Homepage links for project homepages that exist external to the wiki (opt in). There are not many projects that have external homepages, but in the event one does exist it can be added to the wiki project page using this field.

March 10, 2023: New IRC bot for the wiki's recent changes!

Gentoo's newest developer P.Fox (ris) , who done some great work improving our documentation over the last year, has now taken up the Gentoo cloak officially. As a first fruit of his promising involvement, the wiki project is happy to announce that we now have an experimental IRC bot lurking in a newly created #gentoo-wiki-changes (webchat) channel. We expect to develop the bot's intelligence and capabilities for wiki maintenance in future updates.

Please join our new channel if you want to watch our bot spam changes in (nearly) real time. As mentioned, this bot is experimental, and we are open to receiving any helpful feedback and critique as we explore the bot's use case as a monitoring mechanism and discussion facilitator... while you're there, be sure you extend a greeting to P.Fox (ris) !

Please consider donating to our devs who have listed their fund me info.

April 17, 2019: New community user wiki profile form

A community user profile form has been created to help our community members create their wiki profile pages. Using this form will help our community avoid formatting their userspace pages using the traditional {{InfoBox}} templates. Presently the user form is fairly basic. Users can add their real name, nickname, website, PGP key fingerprint, etc. Expect functionality to be expanded in the future.

We anticipate quite a few of the existing issues across the site will be resolved, however with any software updates new issues will almost certainly surface.

This is a public service announcement to remind our loving community to be on the alert for word crimes. We hate to see words abused in terrible ways in our documentation, but YOU CAN HELP. July 14, 2017: Thank you!

A special thank you to all our wonderful contributors and translators who improve the state of our documentation and make important parts of our documents (especially the Handbook) available in non-English. Thank you all for your behind the scenes efforts! For visibility, the article blueprints (useful for creating new articles) can now be found below. Happy editing!

April 20, 2017: Article descriptions and the 'See also' template

Your wiki admins have been experimenting by setting a Article description property in the body of some articles. The goal is to expose more data points and obtain an increasing amount of modularity across the site. Ultimately wiki contributors will eventually write less (and deduplicate) content by using templates to grep for data from other articles (such as the See also template). Properties come with Semantic MediaWiki, an extension to MediaWiki, and can be confusing, so be sure to read up them before getting too carried away.

September 21, 2016: HTTPS for links

As part of our effort to continually improve the wiki, we'd like to encourage the use of HTTPS for external links wherever possible. This is especially important for an article's homepage InfoBox link since it is prominently placed at the top of articles (and more likely to be clicked). Please verify the link supports HTTPS before substituting. Happy improvements!

February 27, 2016: Embedded Handbook

As of today, all parts of the Gentoo Embedded Handbook have been migrated to the wiki. Feel free to add new embedded boards (such as Pine64 and the Raspberry Pi Zero) using the Embedded article blueprint.

This enables the USE flag sections of articles to dynamically load updates as the Portage tree evolves. Contributors can learn more of the details by reading the latest template migration article.

January 05, 2016: Happy New Year!

June 13, 2015: Introducing Article blueprints

The Wiki project members have created some Article blueprints to assist contributors in creating new articles. Visit the blueprint appropriate to the kind of Wiki article being created, then copy and paste the code from the blueprint into a new Wiki article. The goal is to help contributors focus more on quality content and less on structural busywork. Enjoy!
