This page contains a summary of details and rationale for changes made to the Gentoo Handbooks. All changes other than minor grammatical or punctuation changes should be recorded here to more easily track handbook progression over time.

1.1.0 - 2024-02-14

Added

• AMD64:
  • GPT/EFI installation disk partitions to UAPI Group Specification's Discoverable Partitions Specification (DPS).
  • Associated SMW properties set on each architecture's Handbook 'main' page.
  • New Fstab block pages for all arches. See Special:Diff/1281444/1281510
  • TODO: Remaining architecture still pending; may not be necessary to fully implement since UEFI firmware is less used on non-AMD64 architectures.

Refactor

• Refactor:
  • Migrate the suggested ESP mount point from /efi/boot to /efi. This will help avoid unnecessary complication that has historically arisen between the filesystem of /boot and sub-mount point of /boot/efi being a different filesystem, as well as better align with the cross-distribution standardization attempt.

  • Updated kernel installation instructions for the recent changes to sys-kernel/installkernel.
  • Added instructions for signing modules and kernel images.
  • Added instructions for building unified kernel images.
  • Added instructions for setting up systemd-boot and grub for secure boot via sys-boot/shim.

• All: Refactored the "Configuring the Network" section:
  • Refactored atypical applications such as proxies, PPPoE into its own section.
  • Deprecated old network basics.
  • Added network basics explaining routing essentials.
  • Deprecated older network utilities such as route and ifconfig.
  • Added ip usage.
  • Added improved dhcpcd explanation.
  • TODO: Replace WEP with WPA2/3.
• All: Refactored the "The stage file" section:
  • Added greater detail about why certain stage files should be chosen.
  • Refactored it into more sections.
  • Refactored warnings about profile selection into introduction.
  • TODO: Add more detailed information on the desktop target.
• All: Refactored the "Choosing the Media" section:
  • Refactored, splitting 'writing the boot media' into its own section.
  • Added additional information that stage file selection happens later, and is described in greater detail then.
  • Bump freshness of download examples and keys.
  • TODO: add boot USB writing.

1.0.2 - 2023-12-30

• All: Finish adding {{Anchor}} templates for all section headers discoverable within Handbook page matrix. This lays the groundwork for for appropriate linking for translated pages across Handbooks.
