Optioneel: Gebruik maken van systemd als init systeem
De rest van het Gentoo handboek richt zich op OpenRC (het traditionele init systeem van Gentoo) als het standaard init systeem. Indien systemd gewenst is, of GNOME 3.8 of hoger (dewelke systemd nodig heeft) zal geinstalleert worden, gelieve dan het artikel over systemd te consulteren aangezien deze zich uitspreekt over de verschillende configuratie instellingen en methoden, gelijkaardig aan de instructies in de navolgende secties in dit handboek. Meer in het bijzonder gaat het overde verschillende init systeem opdrachten systemctl en systemdspecifieke diensten (zoals timedatectl en hostnamectl) die noodzakelijk zijn om een werkende systemd omgeving op te zetten.
