Improvements to Usability

- the term "OpenRC" is used without any introduction - the term "Gentoo net.* scripts" is used without any introduction - because of the above points this page is not operational for people new to Gentoo installation Sänger

The intention is not loosing too many words about what the article is not about. Those items are better explained in other articles. Newcomers better use Complete_Handbook/Configuring_the_system. I did not dare deleting the 4.2 section, but you may simply skip it. charles17

Current article title

Any reason in particular why this article is titled "Network management using DHCPCD" is instead of simply DHCPCD? Is anyone against moving this article to where the DHCPCD redirect is currently? --Maffblaster (talk) 07:20, 25 March 2015 (UTC)

I intentionally chose that title because "This article is about using OpenRC with DHCPCD as network manager." Other aspects of dhcpcd may go into a general dhcpcd article. --Charles17 (talk) 09:28, 25 March 2015 (UTC)
I propose this page (and the pages under it) be moved to become a sub-article of the Dhcpcd article. --Maffblaster (talk) 18:22, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
If attaching it somewhere else, wouldn't it be better to make it a sub-article of Network management? Then, there could be other sub-articles for Netifrc and the other network managers. But, since a sub-article can be sub-article of just only one other article, I really prefer keeping Network management using DHCPCD as a standalone-article. --Charles17 (talk) 05:35, 9 May 2015 (UTC)
Since it specifically deals with OpenRC integration exclusively for DHCPCD why not attach it? Also, I suggest the title can be improved with the move. We could call it [[Dhcpcd/OpenRC Integration]] --Maffblaster (talk) 18:22, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
For OpenRC Integration there is a subpage [[Network_management_using_DHCPCD/OpenRC_message]] which I think is a better candidate to be moved to [[Dhcpcd/OpenRC Integration]]. --Charles17 (talk) 05:35, 9 May 2015 (UTC)
that way readers can immediately get an idea of what this article is about. Let me know what you think! --Maffblaster (talk) 18:22, 8 May 2015 (UTC)
As this article is mainly about doing network management (with dhcpcd), I think the proposal to rename it [[Dhcpcd/OpenRC Integration]] is not a good idea. But feel free to create a new [[Dhcpcd/OpenRC Integration]] redirecting to or transcluding the content of Network management using DHCPCD. --Charles17 (talk) 05:35, 9 May 2015 (UTC)
I understand that you wanted to quote separate parts of my suggestion, so I'll let your editing of my previous reply stay as it is, but to avoid confusion please do not break up someone's reply like you did with mine above. Keep it as they leave it and comment with another indented line below the reply like I'm doing here. Use separate paragraphs if you want to address different topics in your reply. For example, I'm switching topics now and creating a new paragraph.
Another way of looking at my point above is this: "Network management" is what Dhcpcd does. What is the benefit of having this article in addition to the existing Dhcpcd article? The first sentence of this article says "This article is about using OpenRC with DHCPCD as network manager" which sounds a lot like DHCPCD is being integrated with and managed by OpenRC which is why I suggested the title change/move. Am I misunderstanding the point of this article? Maybe the summary at the beginning is incorrect?
Perhaps it might be better to merge the content of this article with the main Dhcpcd article if the point of this article not specifically OpenRC integration. If OpenRC is the point of the article as the summary suggests, then I believe it makes more sense to have it as a sub-article of the main which could be located at [[Dhcpcd/OpenRC Integration]]. Another thought to consider is having more than one article on DHCPCD could be confusing for readers and provides extra work on article maintenance for Wiki editors. Your thoughts? --Maffblaster (talk) 06:44, 9 May 2015 (UTC)
The article Dhcpcd is meant for installation of the package itself which could also be used in combination with Netifrc or even with systemd. Network management using DHCPCD is the wikification of TIP: Complete network stack without net.* scripts and should not be presented to users of gnome-networkmanager or netifrc or even of systemd. I agree, mentioning OpenRC in the first sentence might be misleading. So I am considering to delete that sentence and hope that systemd users won't start complaining if it doesn't work with systemd. My thought was, instead of saying "This is not for systemd" it's better to say "This is for OpenRC". --Charles17 (talk) 08:13, 9 May 2015 (UTC)

Network Bridge with dhcpcd

Further instruction is needed for using dhcpcd as a network manager; for instance, there is no mention of setting up bridges, or any other slightly more advanced usage.
