Should this page be X11-only, or be for both X11 and Wayland?

This discussion is done.

At the moment this page says:

A window manager manages the creation, manipulation, and destruction of on-screen windows and window decorations in Xorg.

yet includes Hyprland, which is only a Wayland compositor, in the "Available software" list. Since Wayland compositors fill the role of window managers, i'm not fundamentally opposed to them being included on this page; but my preference would be that this page only list WMs that work under X (even if they also function as Wayland compositors, as in the case of KWin). Thoughts?

I see no reason to oppose the removal of Hyprland, since List of software for Wayland#Compositors exists. I think you can just go ahead and remove it, since your reason for doing so is documented here. If someone disagrees, they can always just undo your edit. — Waldo Lemmer 08:46, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
Fair point. i'd still like to wait a bit more to hear from others, because i'd also want to add a Note at the top of the page saying something like "This page is only for window managers that work under X11; if a window manager only works under Wayland, please add it to the 'List of software for Wayland' page", and i know that at least one of the core wiki people has a lot of stuff on their offline plate (as do i!).

I propose modifying the top of Window manager#Available software:
Proposed changes - Please make edits here until a final revision is agreed upon.

This is a partial selection of window managers that work with X11 and are available in Gentoo.
I feel this is clear and precise. If you think a longer note is needed, then I propose adding the following, in addition to the above proposal:
  Important note to editors
Window managers that work under Wayland should be added to the list of compositors. Window managers that work under X11 and Wayland can be added to both lists.

Thanks! i prefer the second version, as it makes it clear where to add Wayland-only WMs; as no-one else has commented, please feel free to edit the page accordingly. :-)
