Man instructions out of date?

Talk status
This discussion is done.

In the Man section, it says to edit /etc/man.conf, but that file doesn't exist on my fresh baselayout-2.2 based Gentoo installation. It appears to have been replaced by /etc/man_db.conf, which has a different format. The relevant line in that file seems to be:

#DEFINE nroff nroff -mandoc

which doesn't mention "ascii" at all (none of the "#DEFINE" lines do—BTW, they are commented out because, as the file says, "the value of the definition is already the default"), so I guess it's already set up for Unicode? (For the record, my man pages are coming out with "blocks" for quotation marks and end-of-line hyphens, so something is clearly not set up right...) - dcljr (talk) 09:22, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Article now addresses this. - dcljr (talk) 13:08, 23 January 2017 (UTC)

Remove "Character encodings" section, link to "Fonts/Background" instead?

Talk status
This discussion is still ongoing as of 2024-11-18.

i'd like to remove the "Character encodings" section and replace it with a link to the "Character sets" section of the Fonts/Background page, to keep the page more directly focused on UTF-8 directly. Any objections?

Also, the "What UTF-8 can do" section currently says:

[M]any people regard UTF-8 in online communication as abusive. It is always best to be aware of the attitude towards UTF-8 in a specific channel, mailing list, or Usenet group before using non-ASCII UTF-8.

i've never encountered this attitude myself, including on the Usenet forums i'm currently following (e.g. comp.unix.shell, comp.lang.c), although to be fair i've only returned to Usenet since Google detached Groups from it. Does this specific bit of information need to be retained, e.g. because it's still an issue on non-English-language fora?

Good idea. Toss that section. IMHO even the "Character sets" section of the Fonts/Background page is bloat in that article and should be replaced with links to to publicly available sources.

Oh, well, i weakly disagree with removing the "Character sets" section, because i wrote that page, including that section, based on what information i've kept having to provide when trying to help people understand and solve their font-related issues: the idea was to have a single page i could point people to, essentially a 'FAQ', rather than having to point them to multiple documents - my experience is that people are oddly disinclined to follow links. But i say "weakly disagree" because, of course, if the consensus is that your suggestion should be implemented, i'll certainly do so. :-)
