The list looks rather long… maybe categorize it a bit? Michał Górny 16:23, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

My thoughts exactly. — yngwin (wiki admin) (talk) 16:30, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

What to list

When I started this page, my intent was to list recommended helper tools, especially for system administration, such as pydf and htop. In the meantime full-blown apps such as mutt have been added. I am considering moving those to another page, either Recommended applications or something like Non-gui applications. Thoughts? — yngwin (wiki admin) (talk) 05:48, 19 September 2012 (UTC)

It would be best to define why these tools are recommended and for what circle of users they are recommended, or for what kind of situation they are recommended. I don't know if a static list of tools or apps is the best approach. Instead we could use PV pairs, in templates for portage packages we write of, so such a list could be generated on the fly based on the pv values. For long term maintanance it is maybe the better approach, you are flexible in terms of generating lists instead of maintaining a list manually. It's just a suggestion. I think it would be best to clean out the list of tools that do not belong there, and we do not create an additional non-gui applications article. That would be fine with me. Needle 17:50, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
I think we should indeed say a little more about why a tool is recommended and for what kind of situations. Maybe add a paragraph per recommendation (definition list style). I'll clean out the applications that are not sys-admin related. — yngwin (wiki admin) (talk) 07:20, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
I think we should subpage gui, and sub page cli. these programs are prehistoric compared to what id like to do here. i want to suggest gvfs + sftp via nautilus/thunar/(not so much)dolphin for remote server file administration. point and click does 10x the work of typing everything out quickly and easily. gftp as gui ftp client. users will want to be able to know and be able to take several paths. there are other pages of somewhat duplicated efforts around here, might as well unify them and set in stone in 1 place and redirect. 666threesixes666 (talk) 21:18, 29 January 2014 (UTC)
