I can confirm that this works now:
However, after setting the output source and adding an external display the Xorg process constantly uses > 30% CPU and the system feels overall sluggish. Do you experience the same? Is this expected behavior or some regression? Any idea where do look first: Xorg, intel driver, nvidia driver? — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dschooh (talk • contribs)

I do not run with an external display on a daily basis. In fact, I only tested this briefly. Not well versed in instrumenting xorg-server or kernel, sorry.
