Neither this article nor Libav tries to explain why one would choose one package over the other. I assume there are reasons, otherwise why have two different packages (politics notwithstanding). - dcljr (talk) 09:07, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

I'd suggest asking the associated ebuild maintainer or project (find out who equery m media-video/ffmpeg or do some research and explain it on the article yourself. You'll find that most ebuild maintainers do not like to touch documentation, but this should not be! Feel free to pester the team about it. Seriously. Please close this discussion if you've found this helpful. If you don't do it after some time I'll eventually get around to closing it. media-video/libav has been removed from the Gentoo repository on 2020-04-26 (see this commit) --Fturco (talk) 10:55, 6 June 2020 (UTC)
