Gentoo doesn't just live on a hard drive, it also lives in the user's minds. It's more than the repository, the code, the tools. Sure that makes part of it, but Gentoo is also made up of concepts, of knowledge, and of collaboration.
When you install Gentoo, you don't just get the thing installed, more importantly you learn what it is and how it works, and you acquire the knowledge that will be needed to use and maintain it over the months and maybe years to come.
