As of August 26th, 2019 Microsoft has published the exFAT filesystem specification^[1] which means support for exFAT can be worked into the mainline Linux kernel. Kernels from 5.4 to 5.6 include initial staging code^[2] for exFAT support, which was replaced by a newer and already stable implementation in Linux kernel 5.7. The newer implementation was originally developed by Samsung, and already had been shipped by the millions across their Android product portfolio.^[3]^[4]
