I had to run:
# systemctl enable greenbone-feed-sync.service # systemctl enable greenbone-feed-sync.timer
in order to enable updating the feeds. it also looks like the net-analyzer/greenbone-feed-sync package provides greenbone-feed-sync.cron as an option to automate this via cron, but it was not installed for me, despite using the 'cron' USE flag.
