This seems to be untrue. There is no reason that iwd is required that I know of. Provide evidence and remember that wpa_supplicant may have issues related to the tkip USE flag
Due to the use of an Intel NIC the use of the iwd package is required, follow the instructions on the iwd page for installation and configuration.

I concur. Wifi/Bluetooth works fine for me, and `equery list @installed | grep iwd` indicates I don't have iwd installed.
All I had to do was follow Iwlwifi, and load some ucode and crap
