Resources

This guide describes how to configure Linux to be able to work with an Intel Corporation PRO 3945ABG wireless card. The wireless configuration itself is not part of this guide, please see Wifi for this.

Kernel

Hardware detection

First verify if the hardware is detected. A number of approaches can be used.

lspci

With lspci the PCI based hardware can be searched through:

root #lspci -nnkv | sed -n '/Network/,/^$/p' | head -n -1

IEEE 802.11

Activate at least cfg80211 and mac80211. Some wireless drivers also require a rate control algorithm.

iwl3945 device driver as module

Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG needs the iwl3945 driver aka iwlegacy. Search (/ in make menuconfig) shows where to find it:

KERNEL linux-4.1 search results
Symbol: IWL3945 [=m]
 Type : tristate
 Prompt: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network Connection (iwl3945)

   Depends on: NETDEVICES [=y] && WLAN [=y] && PCI [=y] && MAC80211 [=y]
   Selects: IWLEGACY [=m]

Set it as a module <M> as shown here. After changes on kernel configuration do not forget to rebuild the kernel.

The help (which can be obtained by hitting the h in make menuconfig) on the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG ... line will show more details about the driver:

CODE linux-4.1 help
CONFIG_IWL3945:

Select to build the driver supporting the:

 Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network Connection

This driver uses the kernel's mac80211 subsystem.

In order to use this driver, you will need a microcode (uCode)
image for it. You can obtain the microcode from:

The microcode is typically installed in /lib/firmware. You can
look in the hotplug script /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent to
determine which directory FIRMWARE_DIR is set to when the script
 runs.

If you want to compile the driver as a module ( = code which can be
inserted in and removed from the running kernel whenever you want),
say M here and read <file:Documentation/kbuild/modules.txt>. The
 module will be called iwl3945.

iwl3945 device driver built-in

In case the driver is built into the kernel (<*>) instead as a module (<M>), also the firmware needs to be built into the kernel.

Firmware

The iwlwifi-3945-ucode-15.32.2.9.tgz firmware (or later) is needed. It is available through the sys-kernel/linux-firmware package.

root #emerge --ask sys-kernel/linux-firmware

Nazwy urządzeń sieciowych

Network device names eth0, wlan0, etc. as provided by the kernel could be changed on boot (see dmesg) by the /lib/udev/rules.d/80-net-name-slot.rules udev rule.

To keep the classic naming this rule can be overwritten with an equally named empty file in the /etc/udev/rules.d directory:

root #touch /etc/udev/rules.d/80-net-name-slot.rules

Check the setup

Module loading

modprobe should not return any errors:

root #modprobe iwl3945

More information about the driver module (such as the supported parameters) can be obtained by modinfo iwl3945:
