The kinds of open discussions can be divided as follows:

  1. Discussions that have not been looked at by anyone (useful for general users)
  2. Discussions waiting for a response from the discussion author (we can ignore these)
  3. Discussions waiting for someone with time (useful for general users; similar to the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://docs.github.com/en/issues/using-labels-and-milestones-to-track-work/managing-labels#about-default-labels">help wanted</a> label on GitHub)
  4. Solved discussions with proposals (mostly useful on protected pages)
  5. Discussions that are easy fixes for newcomers or those with little time (experienced editors leave these to newcomers; similar to the <a rel="nofollow" class="external text" href="https://docs.github.com/en/issues/using-labels-and-milestones-to-track-work/managing-labels#about-default-labels">good first issue</a> label on GitHub)

I propose the following subcategories of <a href="/wiki/Category:Open_discussions" title="Category:Open discussions">Category:Open discussions</a>:

  1. <a href="/index.php?title=Category:New_discussions&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Category:New discussions (page does not exist)">Category:New discussions</a>
  2. <a href="/index.php?title=Category:Discussions_on_hold&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Category:Discussions on hold (page does not exist)">Category:Discussions on hold</a> (other suggestions welcome!)
  3. <a href="/index.php?title=Category:Discussions_needing_help&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Category:Discussions needing help (page does not exist)">Category:Discussions needing help</a>
  4. <a href="/index.php?title=Category:Solved_discussions&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Category:Solved discussions (page does not exist)">Category:Solved discussions</a>
  5. <a href="/index.php?title=Category:Good_first_discussions&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Category:Good first discussions (page does not exist)">Category:Good first discussions</a>

Discussions from the first category would generally be moved to a different one as soon as they're noticed.

The purpose of this is for editors to prioritize looking at new discussions, as well as ones that are easy to fix. It also gives new editors some easy work to do (<a href="/index.php?title=Category:Good_first_discussions&action=edit&redlink=1" class="new" title="Category:Good first discussions (page does not exist)">Category:Good first discussions</a>). Lastly, if implemented, open discussions will be more manageable considering <a href="/wiki/Category:Open_discussions" title="Category:Open discussions">Category:Open discussions</a> is currently two and a half pages long.

This can probably be implemented with additional arguments to <a href="/wiki/Template:Talk" title="Template:Talk">

</a>. However, I would first like some approval before I go down the template rabbit hole.

The existing discussions can gradually be categorized. They can remain in <a href="/wiki/Category:Open_discussions" title="Category:Open discussions">Category:Open discussions</a> and later be moved as editors come across them. Other suggestions are welcome as well.
